Since the early 70s, various state laws have required the installation and use of catalytic converters in automobiles.

Catalytic Converters - Operation and Construction

In principle, a catalytic converter works like a furnace. First, it takes the exhaust from your car engine, and then burns it to transforms whatever toxic matter that's in that exhaust into less harmful substances before it is released into the air.

Inside the catalytic converter are a couple of ceramic blocks that house several small ducts. The walls of these ducts are coated with combinations of platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These serve as the catalysts; the main components of the converter.

As fuel is burned inside the engine, it produces nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and unburned fuel residue, all considered harmful substances that make up the superheated engine exhaust.

The catalytic converter is usually positioned near the exhaust port of the engine and, as the hot exhaust passes through its ducts, they heat up the catalyst metals inside. Contact with the catalyst causes the exhaust components to break down. At the other end of the catalytic converter, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water exit and are carried through the rest of the vehicle's exhaust system and out through its tail pipe.
